A new baby boy for the orca mom who captured hearts
The calf is less than a week old and appears healthy, but his first year will be a critical test. A new baby boy, named J65, has been spotted among the endangered Southern Resident orcas. This is the newest offspring of J35, who made headlines in 2018 for carrying her dead calf on her head for 17 days. Researchers from the Center for Whale Research spotted the newborn, which appears to be nursing, swimming and socializing well. However, only about half of Southern Resident orca calves survive their first year.
