Mossback's Northwest: When Seattle Quakes
From ancient tectonic fractures to 21st Century tremblers, Seattle has been shaped and formed by shaky forces beneath our feet. Mossback's Northwest has been hit by several major quakes, including a recent 8.7 to 9.2 quake off the Northwest coast of North America, which ruptured off the Juan de Fuca plate subduction zone and altered the coastline from northern California to Vancouver Island. This is expected to occur at 300- to 900-year intervals, according to experts. However, on Puget Sound, the area is less exposed from this type of quake, with faults such as the so-called Seattle Fault. This fault was only discovered in 1992 and has since been confirmed by scientists. Other notable examples include a still standing sunken forest in Lake Washington, land on Bainbridge Island and West Seattle that had been lifted up between 20 and 30 feet, and a localized tsunami generated about 1,000 years ago. The author reflects on the experiences of the 1949 quake, 1965, and 2001 Nisqually.
