Europe’s killer heat this summer claims 50,000 lives. Climate change blamed for two-thirds of deaths

More than 50,000 people in Europe died this summer from heat, a record high amount, a new study finds. Record heat in Europe this summer killed over 50,000 people, with nearly two-thirds of the death toll blamed on human-caused climate change. Researchers modeled heat-related deaths for different age groups in 854 European cities during repeated heat waves and found that 50,391 people died from warmer temperatures, and 32,619 died due to the extra heat caused by the burning of coal, oil and gas. This death toll is 71% higher than the previous deadliest summer in 2022. Italy, France, Spain and Germany had the highest death tolls, with Rome having the highest total from 2000 to 2025. The study also found that some European cities had temperatures 21.6 F (12 C) warmer than normal.
