For the first time this season, the Bears are going north. After spending several tournaments in Southern California, Arizona and Louisiana, Cal is traveling to Seattle this weekend to face some of the top Pac-12 teams.

The Bears went 2-2 last weekend at the Death Volley Invitational in Baton Rouge, facing losses against then-No. 5 Florida State and then-No. 4 TCU, but triumphing over then-No. 10 LSU and then-No. 17 Florida Atlantic.

At the Death Volley Invitational, Marilu Pally and Alexandria Young-Gomez were instrumental in leading the team to their victories across the weekend. Pally and Young-Gomez demonstrated an impressive show of skill, refusing to lose the entire weekend and ultimately going 4-0. Young-Gomez was partnered with Emma Donley earlier this season, with the pair having gone 11-5 during their time together.

Lara Boos and Jenna Colligan have also proven to be a strong pairing, helping take down LSU and sustaining individual wins against Florida Atlantic.

Cal has remained relatively consistent throughout the season thus far, maintaining a 15-7 record. This impressive record has the Bears to be currently ranked as high as No. 6 in national collegiate beach volleyball rankings, amongst top teams like Cal Poly, LMU and Stanford.

This weekend, they will have the chance to face a few of these top teams, some for the second time this season. On Friday, the Bears are scheduled to play the University of Arizona at 9 a.m. at Alki Beach.

Cal has yet to face the Wildcats this season. Arizona is currently 15-4 this season, having sustained losses to Washington, USC, Arizona State and Stetson. Last year, the Wildcats ended their season at 21-12, relatively close to Cal’s competing 29-10.

On Friday afternoon, Cal will go head-to-head with UCLA, currently ranked No. 1. The Bears faced the Bruins earlier this season at the Battle for L.A. tournament, where they fell 1-4.

The only teams that UCLA has fallen to this season are USC, LMU and Stanford twice. The Bears, comparatively, dropped 0-5 to Stanford at the Pac-12 South Tournament, but came out triumphant 4-1 over Loyola Marymount at the Battle for L.A. It’s shaping up to be a tough match, but it’s nothing that Cal hasn't been training for.

On Saturday, the Bears will move forward to challenge two more highly competitive teams. In the morning, they are set to play the USC Trojans, the reigning national champions and current No. 3.

Cal has yet to face USC this season, but the Trojans are boasting an intimidating 21-3 record. USC has only lost to Stanford, UCLA and LSU, promising a competitive match for the Bears.

Following its battle with the Trojans, Cal will play its final match of the tournament against the home team, Washington. The Huskies are currently ranked No. 14, having gone 9-9 up to this point. Washington has dropped matches to a majority of the top-ranked teams, including LSU, TCU, LMU, UCLA, Long Beach State, USC and ASU.

It’s certainly shaping up to be a challenging weekend for the Bears, one that allows them to showcase their depth and skill as a team.
