The goal is to help businesses spot potential spoilage and waste less food. Seattle-based ag-tech startup, Strella, has secured $4.25 million in funding to expand its technology that monitors produce for spoilage and food waste. The investment extends the company's Series A round and brings its total funding to $26.25m. The company uses IoT devices to monitor produce using plant hormone released by ripening fruit and machine vision to interpret data such as country of origin, packing date, and varietal type. It serves customers in 26 countries and provides information to growers of apples, pears, avocados and citrus. The funding was led by SilverBlue, with participation from LeVert Ventures, Beta Milouot and PeakBridge. The United Nations estimates that 33% of food intended for humans worldwide is lost or wasted, costing $940 billion in annual economic losses.
