Alki Kayak Tours Faces Closure at Seacrest Park, Seattle

A West Seattle kayak shop says it's about to lose its waterfront home of 13 years — with no bidding process involved. Alki Kayak Tours, a 13-year fixture of West Seattle's waterfront, may be closed within weeks due to Marination Ma Kai, the restaurant that holds the master concession agreement for the Seacrest Park boathouse. The owner, Greg Whittaker, has rented kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, canoes and bikes out of the boathouses since 2013 and claims this will force his company into bankruptcy and dissolution. He alleges that Marination renewed its own concession deal with the City of Seattle and partnered with a new vendor without a competitive bidding process or advance notice. The Duwamish Tribe is the incoming recreation partner for the boatouse sublease. Marination's co-owners, Kamala Saxton and Roz Edison, deny this, stating proper protocol required a signed Letter of Intent before they could disclose the new partner's identity.
