Seattle Startup Working on Pilot-Less Airplanes
Seattle Startup Says Pilotless Planes for Military AND Commercial Use Reliable Robotics, a Seattle-based startup, is working on pilotless airplanes with an R&D center in Bothell and another $115 million in investor money. The Radar Center for Excellence will develop detection and avoidance systems for airplanes, allowing them to fly without hitting other planes. The company is also developing automation systems that would handle many aspects of flight, including engine starting and runup, taxiing, takeoff and landing. Remote operators and observers will help 'control' and monitor the flights from the ground. The applications are for both military and commercial aircraft. However, a recent Pew Research Center study found that between 61 and 70 percent of Americans surveyed expressed fear, discomfort or distrust of an autonomous driverless vehicle on the ground, and that a commercial plane could carry passengers without a human pilot in control.

Despite Waymore operating driverless taxis in a number of US Cities, and Uber strongly eyeing a future driverless fleet, many Americans are still not on board with self-driving vehicles.
