These doctors and community health workers are a safety net for patients losing coverage as premiums soar and Medicaid cuts mount. Dr. Sarah Hershman, a public health clinic worker in Nampa, Idaho, has been sharing her personal number with patients who have no health insurance. These patients are often underinsured and uninsured. The clinic, where Hershmen practices family medicine, is one of 1,400 federally qualified health centers that receive federal funds to care for patients regardless of their ability to pay. Despite cuts to Medicaid and the cost of Obamacare insurance plans rising, the clinic’s doctors and counselors are going to new lengths to provide unpaid care for those with complex medical issues. New work requirements for eligibility will begin across the country on New Year’S Day as part of President Donald Trump’’t domestic policy bill.
